ChatGPT Ads dan Organic Answer: Cara Memisahkan Keduanya dalam Reporting
Ada satu rule yang harus dipasang besar di dashboard:
ChatGPT Ads bukan organic answer.
Dua sistem.
Dua KPI.
Dua interpretation.
Mulai dari nomenclature
Dashboard sebaiknya punya dua bagian.
ORGANIC CHATGPT VISIBILITY
Brand mention.
Owned source citation.
Third-party source.
ChatGPT Search referral.
Accuracy.
Recommendation observation.
PAID CHATGPT ADS
Impressions.
Clicks.
Spend.
CTR.
Conversions.
CPA/ROAS jika tersedia dan relevant.
Landing page performance.
Product/feed performance.
Jangan membuat headline:
“ChatGPT Visibility: 1 juta.”
Kalau 900 ribu adalah ad impressions.
Label:
Paid ChatGPT Ads impressions.
Organic observed brand presence.
Ini menjaga discussion jujur.
Ads tidak membuat organic answer naik
Ini harus ditegaskan berkali-kali.
OpenAI mengatakan advertisers tidak punya ability untuk shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT responses.
Jadi campaign spend bukan organic optimization strategy.
Kalau brand ingin organic answer visibility, pekerjaan tetap:
public information.
search crawlability.
content.
entity.
third-party evidence.
product data where relevant.
citation.
accuracy.
Ads adalah channel acquisition separate.
Ada indirect business effect possible, tetapi bukan model ranking effect.
Misalnya ads meningkatkan brand awareness.
Lebih banyak orang search brand.
More mentions in web eventually.
Itu marketing ecosystem effect.
Bukan “ads boost ChatGPT answer.”
Don't claim causal shortcut.
Sponsored label harus masuk interpretation
User melihat jawaban.
Di bawahnya ad.
Brand ada di ad.
Jika analyst screenshot hanya crop brand, context hilang.
Always capture label.
Sponsored.
Organic.
Search source.
Ads UI.
For internal audit, evidence screenshot must include enough frame to classify.
This is crucial for competitor monitoring.
Competitor appears as ad.
Don't report:
“Competitor recommended by ChatGPT.”
Report:
“Competitor observed in sponsored placement.”
Different strategic response.
Maybe bid/campaign.
Not content/citation.
Ad placement can be relevant to conversation context
OpenAI says ads system considers signals including current conversation context and intent, landing page, title, copy, advertiser context hints and targeting, plus personalization signals when enabled.
So paid relevance can be conversational.
This may make ad feel integrated.
Still separate.
Sponsored.
Not answer.
Reporting must resist perceptual blending.
User experience can be one screen.
Measurement still two systems.
Organic presence can happen with no ad
Brand mentioned in answer.
No sponsored placement.
Organic.
No spend required.
Paid campaign could be off.
Likewise ad can appear even if brand is not mentioned organically.
This creates four states.
State 1:
Organic yes, Paid yes.
State 2:
Organic yes, Paid no.
State 3:
Organic no, Paid yes.
State 4:
Neither.
This matrix is useful.
For high-intent query panel, track both.
Now marketing can see paid/organic overlap.
Don't call overlap “double recommendation.”
One is answer.
One is ad.
Attribution also needs split
Organic ChatGPT click often carries identifiable referral such as `utm_source=chatgpt.com`.
Paid ads likely have their own ads reporting and tracking setup.
Do not combine both under source `chatgpt.com` in GA without campaign parameters.
Use UTM or supported ad click parameters to distinguish.
Example concept:
source=chatgpt
medium=paid
campaign=…
Organic:
source=chatgpt.com
medium=referral or organic_ai depending internal convention.
Your naming can vary.
But create stable taxonomy.
Without it, paid sessions inflate “organic ChatGPT referrals.”
This is a classic attribution problem.
Ads Manager should be source of truth for paid delivery metrics
Paid:
impressions.
clicks.
spend.
conversion reporting.
Use Ads Manager/API when available.
Analytics validates onsite behavior.
Don't calculate paid impressions from screenshots.
Organic:
no equivalent universal publisher impression dashboard from OpenAI Search in same sense.
Use controlled observation + referral analytics.
Keep provenance.
This is important because data quality differs.
Paid platform telemetry is campaign-level.
Organic observation sample-based.
Don't put both percentages side by side without method note.
Organic brand presence is not CTR denominator for ads
Suppose:
Organic presence 20% of 100 test prompts.
Ads CTR 2%.
No direct relation.
One denominator:
prompt observations.
Other:
paid impressions.
Do not calculate “combined visibility efficiency.”
Unless methodology specifically designed.
Avoid composite score.
Paid and organic can inform each other strategically but not arithmetically.
Landing page can be same, tracking must still differ
Brand might use same service page for:
organic ChatGPT referral.
ChatGPT Ads.
Google organic.
LinkedIn.
No problem.
But tracking should distinguish.
UTM.
First-touch.
Last-touch.
Campaign.
Referrer.
CRM.
Page itself must handle query parameters cleanly.
Canonical remains clean.
Do not redirect UTM away before capture.
This is analytics hygiene.
Paid landing page also needs OAI-AdsBot crawlability for validation.
Organic Search source needs OAI-SearchBot.
Same page may need both bots.
Robots policy should reflect both.
AdsBot access doesn't imply organic inclusion
Another critical distinction.
Allow OAI-AdsBot so ad landing page can be validated.
That does not mean page becomes organic ChatGPT Search source.
OAI-SearchBot handles Search.
Conversely, allowing OAI-SearchBot doesn't validate ad landing page for Ads.
OAI-AdsBot required.
Crawler functions mirror reporting split.
Paid bot.
Search bot.
Different.
This is one reason global “allow OpenAI bot” policy is too vague.
Advertiser data and conversation privacy
OpenAI states conversations are kept private from advertisers and user data is not sold to advertisers.
Advertisers do not get access to chat content as a raw conversation dataset.
Ads system uses relevant signals under product privacy rules.
For reporting, marketers should not expect prompt-level personal conversation logs.
Design analytics around aggregate campaign data.
Do not ask for data platform intentionally withholds for privacy.
If conversion happens on your site, standard first-party data rules apply.
Consent.
Privacy policy.
Data minimization.
The presence of AI doesn't remove obligations.
Don't use screenshots as organic proof when ad is present
Agency case study risk.
“Brand X tampil di ChatGPT.”
Screenshot shows sponsored card.
No organic mention.
This is misleading if presented as GEO result.
Must say:
ChatGPT Ads placement.
Likewise if organic answer cites brand, don't call it paid success.
Paid agency and GEO team should maintain separate evidence folders.
Labels.
Date.
Query/context.
Surface.
Country.
Ad account/campaign if paid.
Source URLs if organic.
This prevents internal confusion.
Board reporting should show both on one page but separate
Example:
ChatGPT Organic
Observed brand presence: 34%.
Owned source presence: 18%.
Identifiable referrals: 420.
Qualified leads: 12.
ChatGPT Ads
Impressions: 120,000.
Clicks: 2,400.
Spend: X.
Leads: 80.
CPA: Y.
Then combined business view:
Total ChatGPT-attributed leads with deduplication.
But be careful.
A user may see ad and organic answer in same session.
Attribution overlap.
Analytics should deduplicate conversion if one person.
Campaign platform and CRM may both claim.
Use attribution model.
Don't sum blindly.
Paid can cover gaps while organic matures
Strategically, paid and organic can coexist.
Organic visibility may take time.
Ads can buy exposure to relevant conversations if advertiser program available and campaign eligible.
But treat it like search ads + SEO.
One doesn't guarantee other.
Paid helps immediate reach.
Organic builds durable information presence.
Budget decision depends objective.
New launch:
paid useful.
Authority:
organic content/evidence.
High-intent conversion:
both.
Do not frame as either/or.
But keep measurement separation.
Ads can reveal intent language
Paid campaign data may show which creative/context performs.
This can inform content research.
But don't reverse-engineer user's private chats.
Use aggregate campaign insight.
Maybe product X converts in certain contextual category.
Content team can create better public pages.
This is indirect learning.
Again, paid performance doesn't prove organic ranking factors.
Use as customer insight.
Organic can improve paid landing quality
A good public site:
clear product.
price.
policy.
evidence.
UX.
Also makes ad landing page better.
OAI-AdsBot can validate.
User converts.
So shared foundation exists.
The systems are separate, but website quality supports both.
This is similar to SEO and PPC.
Technical, content, brand, conversion quality overlap.
Ranking and bidding remain separate.
What should not be in combined report
Don't create:
“ChatGPT share of voice” combining ad impressions + organic mentions.
Denominators incompatible.
Don't create:
“AI citation ROI” including paid conversions.
Wrong label.
Don't say:
“Ads made us appear in answer.”
Unsupported.
Don't say:
“Organic mention is free ad.”
It may have brand value, but semantics differ.
Use precise terms.
Precision protects trust.
How to audit competitor
Core query panel.
For each:
Organic competitor mention.
Organic source.
Sponsored competitor ad.
Ad position/context if relevant.
Separate.
Over time:
Competitor organic strong, paid low.
Competitor paid strong, organic low.
Both.
Neither.
Different responses.
If paid strong:
media strategy.
If organic strong:
information/evidence/reputation analysis.
Don't chase wrong problem.
At the end, reporting should answer two questions.
Organic:
“What does ChatGPT say and source about our brand without paid influence?”
Paid:
“What sponsored exposure and business outcome did we buy?”
OpenAI makes the product separation explicit.
Our analytics should do the same.
The worst dashboard is one that takes a sponsored placement, an organic citation, and a referral click, then compresses all three into one number called “AI visibility.”
It may look neat.
It tells management almost nothing.
Separation creates complexity.
But useful complexity.
Because only then we know whether next dollar should go to media, website, content, product data, ads, or technical crawlability.
Paid is paid.
Organic is organic.
Measure both.
Never confuse them.
